I ma looking for a GUI scaner frontend
I want an application which scans directly to pbm format. Xsane don't use pbm. Kooka from KDE works with pbm but has ugly interface.

XSane does use PBM format.

xsane acts as a stand-alone program that saves acquired images in a suitable PNM format (PBM for black-and-white images, PGM for grayscale images, and PPM for color images) or converts the image to JPEG, PNG, PS or TIFF.
--- from the xsane manual. You can also use the GIMP as a front-end for xsane.

Ok, you right. Settin options "Save" and "by ext" solves partially my problems.
But may be there is a simpler solution. I am still looking for an app which will
have multipage functionality. And a simple previewer. I want to see how many pages was scanned. Not only the last scan file number. Kooka at a some point is suitable for me - what annoys me much is a default "Kooka gallery" root directory hidden in the .kde directories tree. And how Kooka manges scanned immages.

OK. I found not perfect but at this moment quite satisfactory solution: the default Kooka's directory
is now a symbolic link to a location in the ~/ directory. For my goals Kooka is now better solution

Psychic apps are much in demand but seldom attained ;)
From what I can make out, the functionality you desire is fairly standard, but most people prefer something different so it is not set up by default. You have to explore the manuals and the menus to find it - bear in mind it may not be called after what you expect.
