I hear I can turn my Sony Ply stn 3 into a mini supercomputer with Linux Yellow Dog?

With the Play station 3 having a Cell broadband engine 2, 9 core CPU,
I heard that there is a Linux software called Yellow Dog that can turn
the Sony Play station 3 into a mini supercomputer.? Is this correct.?
If so is Terra soft solutions still selling the software.?.
Please I need your opinions on this.?

As far as I know support for "Other OS" on the PS3 has been removed permanently. I don't think it ever gave supercomputer performance though.

Indeed, and note that the PS3 only came with 7 cores, and as a dev you only have access to 6. In the OtherOS you also did not have access to the graphics card.

Note, however, that there have been new developments since the Other OS has been removed:

A couple of years back I looked at buying a PS3 specifically for this. No games, but a Blueray player would have been a nice bonus.
IBM put out an SDK that allowed you to access the SPEs ... a *Linux* compiler. A quick look determined it would be a bitch to program, and even worse to work out what I could sensibly use the architecture to do in my day-to-day environment.

I got cold feet, and spent my money elsewhere. Everyone else seems to be heading that way too ...
Then Sony did the normal Sony thing and tried to shaft all the (money paying) customers they already had. F*ck 'em.

Is there any Linux based software that can be loaded now on play station 3,?.

It depends, do you still have the option for OtherOS = you didn't update the firmware ? If not, see the link I posted.

To be correct I think I read some US team used a bank of PS3's just for that use. As to how they did it may be an issue of who knows what. One can still make a ps3 use linux as far as I know. It is not simple and seems to be legal only if you own the device. Sony is trying to drop sites that tell how to do it claiming dcma violations.

As to how super a single cell system would be is that it would not be super.

I can't find the link to the latest news about a US team using them I think it was livermore or maybe Air Force maybe. They put together something like 250 of them.

As above you have to be able to somehow get linux on it. Yours may do it if you didn't upgrade it.

This is exactly what I read over the internet. Some computer scientist professor hooked up
16 sony play staion 3, and ran some black hole mathematical computations on them. And the professor said the 16 sony play station 3's ran faster and performed better than a supercomputer he was previously using!?. You have to Google --->linked Sony play station 3
runing as supercomputers to read the story. This is all real.!
