Exclamation I cant Log in to Ubuntu 12.4 64 bit Please help

I am using Ubuntu 12.4 64 bit. I have been using it for about a year and I like it. I love the fact its not windows. I made a ridiciously hard password last night and I forgot it. Ok no problem I went to a ubuntu help site and found the way to reset it.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/24006...ative-password

I did as it said and reset the pw in safe mode. I gave me a confirmation it had been changed so i went beck to normal boot mode and restarted the computer. I attemped to log in, puttin the new pw, it them went black for exactlly 3 seconds and immidetlly sent me right back to the log in screen and over and over we go I can get no where. It just send me right back into the login screen. I attemped a false pw and it says its false so i know its not a password problem. can anyone help me with this I am limited to the guest account, which is still better than windows...

Hi,

it seems your X session is failing for some reason. Please check the .xsession-errors file in the home directory of the user that is having trouble logging in. You may also find useful information in /var/log/user.log

HTH,

Hi,

I didn't use any abbreviations. su is a command that you run in a terminal to change to a different user. I also suggest a log file you could look at to get more information. Without more information about the problem, or a specific question from you there is little that anyone can do.

Sorry, I don't know what that means.

If you gave your new user administrative privileges, you could log in as that user and prefix and command (such as copy) with sudo. To copy from the /home/user1 directory to the /home/user2 directory (first create a user1 directory in /home/user1) just run:

sudo cp /home/user1/* /home/user2/user1/

That's just a general example so if you don't understand it inquire.

Yeah, I need a little more detailed instructions about how to do that. when i enter the command in the terminal /home/user1 directory to the /home/user2 directory do I have to enter names of the accounts? I thinkl I got it but i just need a little more info.

Thanks - Mitch

You need to replace 'user1' and 'user2' above with the actual user names you created. You should be able to do it from the file manager also if you find that easier. Just copy whichever files you want and paste them wherever you want. The command method would be quicker, usually. That would be if all the files you want to copy from are in the /home/user2 directory and you want to copy them from the /home/user1 directory.

I tryed the file manager method and it says whan i enter the user 1 /home/user1/ .... Error opening directory '/home/user1': Permission denied. How would i grant myself permission to view the files?? This is crazy it my computer! Why would it lock me out of my own computer??
