Hi Kyle.
We need more info to help you. What Linux distro are you using? Do you have the gcc compiler loaded?

hi, im running mandriva 2008, but i dont have the gcc suite installed. That is my eventual plan, i am trying to install zlib as it is required for installing the RPM manager, which i was hoping to use to install GCC which has a fortran compiler and all I want to do is learn to program in fortran!!

Package 'rpm' is already installed, zlib too, I guess.
To make a text file with installed stuff :
'rpm -qa | sort > packages.txt'

And use the package manager, "Install - Remove - Software"
which should be preferred to install anything you want.
Please choose "All" in both columns to see all packages.
Also use > Settings > Repositories to set up from where
to get packages.

Compiling or installing packages like rpm and zlib already
being there will probably mess up your system.

'make' is a package, so is 'zlib-devel' ,just install with
the package manager or command # 'urpmi <package.rpm> (equal
functions : download and install.)
