I cannot get Red Hat 9 installed on my new hard drive?
I was forced to put a new hard drive in today, and because Windows XP was preinstalled on former hard drive(have no discs), I decided to try Linux software, I purchased Red Hat Bible 9, which contains 3 CDs, but everytime I try to boot, I get "Boot Failure"...what am I doing wrong? I have CD 1 in CD drive, and changed my BIOS to Boot from CDROM, help me please.
I am still using dial-up connection, but when I try to set up my internet connection, there is no modem detected- Is my existing modem incompatiable, and if so what type is compatiable?
Thanks, I finally got my pc booted about 2:30 am, and got Red Hat up and running, I bought another modem, Kudzu recognized that I removed the old modem, but when I try to set up my internet connection it still says no modem found....help me please. I am extremely new to this, and haven't got a clue what I am doing..I was astonished when I installed the hard drive, and new cd drive and they actually worked, getting the software installed was really amazing, but I'm completely clueless.
Most PCI modems do not work with linux. These modems use software to control them and most of them are supported by kudzu but your system can not make them work without some sorta driver. You may be able to get an emulator driver. Contact your manufacturer and ask them if they can help. IF not Google or ask in the hardware fourm. I just use an old ISA modem that uses hardware to config. I know that there are modems available. I use a DSL connection so I didn't have to bother with having a fast modem. A slow one works for the backup.
get the scanmodem utility from linmodems.org
which will on running give u detailed information regarding ur modem and u will be able to find more information on it
I purchased a CPU Builders PCI 56k V.92 Modem...I was told by the person working at the store/and on the box it states it is "supposed" to work with Linux 2.4 kernel or higher, I just don't understand this stuff- Kudzu noticed when I took the old modem out, but didn't detect it when I tried setting up my internet connection, and it does not detect the new modem either...and if there is a driver "out there", it's going to be very difficult to get it on my desktop. The person at the store asked.."why did you want to change from Windows..." as in I didn't know what the heck I was doing, (though true), a little rude..." I had to explain to them I was given the computer with Windows installed on the hard drive.....I had to replace the hard drive....and I cannot afford to buy Microsoft software in addition to the new hard drive and cd drive(use to have only a read cd drive)it quit working when I installed the new hard drive(door wouldn't open)....I'm confused, frustrated, and on the verge of tears....I think I did pretty well, getting the new hard drive, cd, and the software installed-considering I have NO experience doing such,,but the dang modem stuff is driving me crazy...and all I hear is "for a fee" if you bring it in we can get it going....That will be the very last thing I do, because what if something happens again.....and I can't figure out how to fix it, I'll be stuck paying "fees" .
Would I be better off to scrap the idea of getting my internal modem working, and just purchase a external serial port modem? At this point, getting the drivers seems impossible..the pc I can access the internet with only has a hard drive, and a cd (read only) drive.....so that poses a problem.
Additionally, does anyone know anything about HP Deskjet 3520 printers....when I try to configure it...it appears to be the only printer not available on the list. The cd that came with the printer is made for windows. of course, just like the cd for the modem...I am wondering why manufacturers of certain hardware...state/claim to be Linux compatiables, but only enclose a cd for Windows software? Doesn't help a whole lot, when the support they offer is to tell you to download the drivers for your modem, that isn't working. Thanks so much for your replies, and I am certain you will be seeing me again, but I'll try to make sure I post in the correct forums in the future. (I think I should be in Linux Hardware forums.)
I ended up going and getting another modem, this time a Zoom Serial Port External- I saw it mentioned several times....and at first it wouldn't work either, so I "confiddled" around with it a little while, and it started working. Everything looks "funny" to me though....I'm going to have to adjust to the set up (visual, and everything else), but it seems pretty cool. I am still having a problem with my printer (hp deskjet3520 , it uses usb), it's not on the list and hp wesite only offers windows. I'm prolly going to have to buy a new printer too.
Thanks for all your help.

could u please get to what did iu do to get that workin???
Also if you get this on a network and get samba running so you can share this printer with other win computers just set the printer up on your win comp as an Apple postscrip 12/600 or something to that affect. Its usually the first printer on the list for apple.
Masand,
Honestly, I don't know what I did. I just hooked it up, plugged it in, let Kudzu detect it and configure it, then went to internet configuration wizard, entered my info, checked an made sure it was showing /dev/ttys0, activated, and it started dialing...I think I just got lucky. I'm sorry I cannot be more specific or helpful...I am new to everything. All I can do is recommend Serial Modems to new users, who do not have access to be able to download drivers, or know how to build modules, or compile kernels(I haven't got a clue how to do that.)
I found a little trick to the printer problem, Kudzu does see my printer, as a 3500 series (which are not on the list ), but because it, HP Deskjet 3520, uses ahpijs driver- I chose another printer Deskjet 3320(which uses hpijs), I went to driver options and set the resolution at 600 dpi, color, Black + Color Catr.- only kink is it keeps showing "Media Tray Empty" under Description while it is printing. BUT it is printing.
