I can't get KVM working. FATAL: Module kvm_intel not found.

I'm running Puppy Linux Precise 5.7.1 from a USB flash drive. I installed qemu-kvm, and I'm trying to get my 64-bit Windows 7 (installed to hard disk) to boot up inside qemu, but I can't get the kvm module to load. running qemu-system-x86_64 gives this:

failed to initialize KVM: No such file or directory
Back to tcg accelerator.

modprobe kvm_intel doesn't work.

FATAL: Module kvm_intel not found.

I do have the qemu-kvm package installed. How do I get the kvm_intel module to load?

Does the kvm-intel.ko (note: dash, not underscore) module even exist on your system? It should reside in the /lib/modules/<kernel_version>/kernel/arch/x86/kvm/ directory, where <kernel_version> is the version reported by uname -r.

Be aware that many systems are shipped with hardware virtualization disabled in the BIOS, in which case you'll need to enter the BIOS setup utility and enable it before the module will load. Also, is your server Intel- or AMD-based? The equivalent module for AMD systems is kvm-amd.

I searched for that file and couldn't find it. I've got an Intel Core i3 processor and yes, VT-x is enabled in the BIOS. It seems like the qemu-kvm package didn't include the kvm module.

qemu-kvm isn't supposed to include the KVM modules; they're part of the Linux kernel.

This is a problem with Puppy Linux. Either you need to install a package of some sort, or the kernel you're using has been compiled without KVM support.

Is there a /proc/config.gz file on your system? If so, what output does zcat /proc/config.gz | grep KVM produce?

So basic KVM support is compiled into the kernel, but there's no trace of either CONFIG_KVM_INTEL or CONFIG_KVM_AMD. Decidedly odd, and a quick Google search didn't turn up any obvious answers.

I think you'd better head over to the Puppy Linux subforum and ask where you can find the the required KVM modules.
