I can't figure out why mount is giving me this error

Hi all,

Code:
hell:~# mount -o ro,loop,offset=1 /mnt/aux/HD.img /mnt/tmp
mount: No such file or directory
obviously, both /mnt/aux/HD.img (regular file) and /mnt/tmp (directory) exists.

Any idea?

Thank you

Well, do you have actual loop devices? Try
Code:
 ls /dev/loop*
to find out how many loopback devices do you have. If none, maybe you need modprobeing loop.
Also (a radical approach) try
Code:
 strace -f -o log -s 1024 mount -o ro,loop,offset=1 /mnt/aux/HD.img /mnt/tmp
and post log contents.

Thank you for your help

Code:
hell:~# ls /dev/loop*
/dev/loop0 /dev/loop2 /dev/loop4 /dev/loop6
/dev/loop1 /dev/loop3 /dev/loop5 /dev/loop7

/dev/loop:
0
strace output (I've replaced binary and textually raw data with ***DATA*** and ***TEXT*** to shorten it up):

And why do you specify offset 1? It seems to mean 1 byte offset, which is not what you probably wanted.

You are right: I would intend 1 block instead, but specifying offset=512 doesn't solve this problem, even if I not specify offset at all.

I was specifying offset to skip the partition table on the drive image and mount the first partition.

If I manually do
Code:
losetup /dev/loop0 /mnt/aux/HD.img
then i can do
Code:
hell:/# fdisk -l /dev/loop0

Disk /dev/loop0: 20.0 GB, 20003880960 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2432 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x7ccd472d

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/loop0p1 * 1 637 5116671 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/loop0p2 638 1488 6835657+ 83 Linux
/dev/loop0p3 1489 1550 498015 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/loop0p4 1551 2432 7084665 5 Extended
/dev/loop0p5 1551 2432 7084633+ b W95 FAT32
but loop0pX is just an fdisk naming convention and these partition aren't seen by the kernel

anyway, trying to mount the entire device will result in getting the same error:
Code:
hell:/# mount /dev/loop0 /mnt/tmp
mount: No such file or directory
...just to avoid mistakes:
Code:
hell:/# ll /mnt/

OK, you missed one more time. fdisk gives numbers of cylinders. file -s will give you actual partition start in sectors. it is 32256, 63*512 sectors offset.
