Angry i am not able to play .dat files in linux


i installed real player, helix player, xine, xmms rpms but iam not able play .dat files in linux. can anyone help me inthis topic. i want to install PowerDVD in linux. can u provide me the link for powerDVD download

You were one short. Install mplayer (and the win32 codecs if you didn't already). Mplayer will play just about anything (I even use its Windows port on my Win box)

please give me the link for mplayer free download for linux. what file is to be downloaded rpm or bin. if bin how must it be compiled.

what distro you are using? try to get it from your distro repositories

configure the mplayer source

i have downloaded the file with extension as tar.bz2. now how can i configure that.

Read this. The only difference is that you have to use

$ tar xjvf filename.tar.bz2

because you have a .tar.bz2. You can't use $ tar xzvf... as that's for tar.gz files.

And then, in order to play .dat files, that is a Video CD, you should use code similar to the following:

Code:
mplayer vcd://2
You should try vcd://1 or vcd://3 and so on if the first one does not work.

Usually the first file in the list also has the GUI built in, so you could use the GUI front end by typing gmplayer instead, if you have it compiled in.
