I don't know whom your post is directed to, but I'll respond. Much open source software is evolutionary in nature. New, bug-fixed versions are released all the time. Therein lies the rub. Try to update the buggy, two-year-old version of an app that came on your distro CD with the latest and greatest bug-fixed version for a one-way ticket to dependency hell. Go have a look at www.gnucash.org and see how many bug fixes and features have been added since the version that came on your distro CD. Now try to update. Good luck.

And there's you talking about old versions of things chris319, when surely if you had checked the latest "epidemiological" advice, you would have then used "new variant CJD and SARS" as your analogy!
