I am going to go postal (help with APT)

All i wanted to do was install window maker! You need gcc, well okay...
Dependencys failed, get KRB5 dev and openssl dev, grrr.... KRB5 dev needs KRB5-libs 1.25, openssl needs libSDL and libsmpeg, damn you! libs mpeg you need libasound.

DAMN YOU!

Are there any pakages out there that have a whole bunch of simple binarys that would cut down on all these dependency failings? Downloading and installing one program has already ballooned to about 8. Is there any way to fix this?

Thx Lotmr

What distrobution are you using? You could always use apt which in my experience always fixes the dependency issues.

apt4rpm.sourceforge.net

but there doesn't appear to be an RPM in the default repository for WindowMaker, so you'll need to add an additional source to your /etc/apt/sources.list

Please do not bump threads after several hours or less. You should only bump threads if your not getting responses after about 24 hours or so... in which you were already recieving help. Thanks.

Lotmr 06-15-2003 05:17 PM

Sorry about that. And I need a bit more info on APT and what it does.

Thanks

is window maker not on the cd's that you installed with?

Cerbere 06-15-2003 07:15 PM

You could try a more descriptive subject. That way you might get a response without having to bump.

Lotmr 06-15-2003 07:40 PM

Crebere please post something constructive or not at all. (No offence)
Macewan its not there.

Another option is to discover how to check for dependencies and install them first, instead of becoming frustrated by attempting to work backwards from error messages.
As I recall (when I was using RPM distros) there is an option in, at least some of the RPM install managers, to display dependencies.

LOL! I'll have to look for that option!

Seriously, I can never get rpm to do anything BUT display dependencies.

for info on what apt is/does etc look here.

Or, if you're really serious about learning about all things linux the try here though if you try this second link, then stand by to get really stressed out. It aint no deadrat or mandrake!!!

John

p.s. I can't quite follow why you seem to have so many "dependency problems", maybe I have been lucky, and only had that twice.

How many CDs have you? Those are standard RPMs that come on the install CDs. Yep,from the files you listed you're missing the third CD for ML 9.1.
