Hello.

I am VERY new to redhat 9.0 or linux in general. I have been a windows/mac os < X user all my life, I always hated windows but never had the courage to use something else and "fight the big man." I bought Redhat 9.0 for $50 (ey, no money left now) and JUST installed it. I used the CD to boot and installed everything beautifully. Everything is and was excellent except for one thing, when I boot RedHat (from GRUB) and it finishs all the checks (OK, Ok, etc) and the OS loads (I presume) I see nothing. The screen goes COMPLETELY black, as it was simply off. However, the HD/Processor light (the orange one) blinks for a while, but all the while the screen is dead black.

I think this may be the result of 2 possible issues. This is what I think, if it sounds resonable can you PLEASE tell me how to fix/change this:

(1) During the installation (after the main install), when I was able to select my monitor from a BIG list of supported monitors, I couldn't find my Dell D1028, I chose the closest one (Dell D1025 HX, I think).

Could selecting the wrong monitor be result of my post-boot black screen of death? If so, HOW CAN I GO BACK TO THAT SCREEN (or menu) WHERE I CAN CHOOSE MY MONITOR??

(2) I have a cheap Nvidia 2 MX 400, and the instruction book said there may be problems with Nvidia cards. But my card is really old, so I think redhat 9 will definitly support it.

I tried to reboot the installer (by inserting CD install #1 before the boot) and tried to find something there, but had no luck. It went through the basic options, placed an install image on my HD, and then said "Congrats, all done." I couldn't change anything as I did the first time installed.

Help me if you can. Thanks in advance VERY MUCH.

PS. The image of the installer on my HD, is it gone after the install finishes??
And also, is there anyway to skip the GRUB screen (besides waiting for some 10 secs)?

I would try to reinstall as expert. See if you can find something on where to tell it to use expert mode. It should give you more options then.

In Mandrake you hit F1 and then type "expert" at the prompt.

If you can do this you should test your monitor settings before you leave the install. Mandrake has the option and Redhat most likely does to.

I don't use Redhat. Sorry I can't be more specific.

I'm not really sure in Redhat. In Mandrake it has a screen that comes up when it boots off the CD, hit F1 or enter. Enter is for a fresh install and F1 is for rescue or options/patches. I don't know how Redhat does though. It should be some info on the Redhat site that will explain how to do that.

I wish someone that uses Redhat and knows would answer. Sorry, I plan to install Redhat before long so I can help with these questions.

This I think is what you need. Note you may have to reinstall the OS. Make sure if you do that you "test" your monitor before leaving the install. Don't wory I did this once to. I knew better though.

The first link in previous post should have info about the testing part.

boot into rescue mode with your cd1 and run the X configurator and manually enter the values for your monitor....there will be no issues with your video card as it will use the generic "nv" driver...you will type at the prompt xf86config after booting to rescue mode...
you may have to go to dells site to find the horizontal and vertical frequencies for your monitor unless you have your monitors manual handy...you will also notice that you can select nvidia gf2 (generic) from the video card database in the configurator so that won't be an issue...
after running the configurator and setting your monitor up properly, reboot the machine like you normally would, and see if you have success....
also i should note....when in rescue mode, check the /var/log/xfree86.0.log file for any errors...the line will begin with (EE) for the error that occured...you can tell us what this is, if configuring the monitor properly doesn't work...

Everything is good now. I tried using the rescue but found no way to get a command line (the only command line I saw was after the rescue finished and wanted me to type "exit" to exit rescue and reboot). I tried very hard to find a way to change directories (cd in dos) from post-rescue and the "boot:" thing. I simply reinstalled RedHat 9, and this time selected the probed monitor. Everything is perfect now. I am playing around with RedHat, trying options and getting a feel. I REALLY REALLY like what I have seen so far. My next task is getting my USB WLAN card to be noticed by RedHat and be able to connect to my wireless network in my house. Thanks for all the help dalek and DrOzz.
