I'd like some help with configuring tuner card and it's radio in Slack 12.0 (v4l)

Alright, recompiled my kernel yesterday and tried setting up my tuner card today. The problem is, I don't understand much about Video4Linux. When I configured the card some months back, I had to install bttv module and xawtv that had some configuring utilities. As I understand now, V4L is already in the kernel.

My card is some Hauppauge bt878 based thing with a builtin FM radio.

Kernel is 2.6.21.5

I compiled the following options to my kernel:
CONFIG_I2C
CONFIG_I2C_CHARDEV
CONFIG_I2C_VIA
CONFIG_VIDEO_DEV
CONFIG_VIDEO_V4L1
CONFIG_VIDEO_HELPER_CHIPS_AUTO
CONFIG_VIDEO_BT848
CONFIG_VIDEO_SAA6588

That should be enough?

How am I supposed to configure the tuner and radio? Will I still need xawtv?

If I do then maybe you could help me out here too.

Code:
bash-3.1# pwd;make
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95
  LD console/fbtv
console/fs.o: In function `fs_open':
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:226: undefined reference to `FSListFonts'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:235: undefined reference to `FSOpenBitmapFont'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:236: undefined reference to `FSFreeFontNames'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:240: undefined reference to `FSQueryXInfo'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:243: undefined reference to `FSQueryXExtents16'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:244: undefined reference to `FSQueryXBitmaps16'
console/fs.o: In function `fs_connect':
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:196: undefined reference to `FSOpenServer'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:198: undefined reference to `FSServerName'
/usr/src/xawtv-3.95/console/fs.c:201: undefined reference to `FSServerName'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [console/fbtv] Error 1
./configure works without a hitch.

I have the same card, and I have been unable to get it working with the 2.6.22 kernel under Slackware. I go to enable the bt878 driver in the kernel, and there is no option for it anymore. I looked at the Slackware config for 2.6.21, and it looks like more cards were available, including mine. Why would they remove bt878 support in 2.6.22? I see no bt878 drivers when I try configuring my kernel. Am I just retarded?

I really don't belive they'd remove the support for something. Did you check your kernel config for the CONFIGs listed in the first post? If you use make xconfig/gconfig then some options might be hidden until you select their dependencies.

config file for 2.6.19 does not have radio options

I'm running a 2.6.19 kernel and do not see where there is a location to set the kernel module option "radio" to "1" (i.e. radio=1). In fact, there is nothing to suggest the kernel is even that a radio tuner from Hauppauge, exists, as either a standalone card or as an option for the video cards (the not-as-old winTV card with the BT878 chip. (I don't think there is a BT848 card that also has radio).

I'm wondering if you can still set radio=1 by not compiling the driver into the kernel, and leaving as a loadable module (assuming this is an option).
