I'm trying to install redhat 7.1 on an old Everex 486 with 16M memory. I made a boot disk, but as soon as the installation starts I get a message that I don't have enough system memory. I have tried changing the setup, but no luck. Is there any hope for this machine?

Try Slackware Linux. They have a low memory boot disk that you can use to get started, but I think that the regular boot disk may work just fine. No more than a year ago I had installed Slackware on a P60 with 16MB of ram with no problems.
