Give bluefish a try. Works great for me.

I use bluefish or vi for editing pages. Also I use Zend for complicated PHP.

Vim, baby!

if you are use to looking at tags then go with the above suggestions (except emacs :P) if you are new to it and just want a basic page with bold text here and italics there consider mozilla's composer.

abiword is also an option.

I tried using bluefish but the editor is sooo freaking slow when making changes to text. It's downright painful...

Now I'm using gvim or gedit. Kate works nicely too if you're into KDE.

Give Quanta a try. I find that it is the best html editor I've used.
