.htaccess troubleshooting

Hello,

This isn't directly a Linux problem, but I thought I'd still see if anyone is able to give me any advice. I recently was given access to a website and am trying to set up a .htaccess file to password-protect a directory.

My .htaccess file is in the appropriate directory, is chmod 644, and has the following contents:

Code:
AuthName "Private"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /home/myuser/.htpasswd

require valid-user
I created a .htpasswd file in /home/myuser with the htpasswd command, and it has 640 permissions. I have confirmed with the web server people that their apache configuration allows me to use .htaccess files.

I clear the cache in my browser, go to the appropriate URL, and enter my username/password in the box, but it doesn't let me in (the password box keeps coming up). I have confirmed I am using the right username/password, and have tried creating new ones and using them instead.

I've looked all over and found various troubleshooting tips, but I'm out of ideas as to what could be wrong. Any suggestions?

Are you sure that the user that runs apache can read this file. You can change its' permissions to 644 to see if this is the case.
Also try to use another borwser and/or computer to see if it's a browser issue.
