hpijs update puzzlement

Running SuSE 8.2 on an i686, and want to update to latest driver just released, for my HP Deskjet. HP's tar instructions say to place the hpijs tar file in "my directory", etc. Now that's just peachy! Should I assume it should be "untarred" in the directory that already contains the previous version of hpijs? Should I remove the current driver first? Being a veteran of several crashed Linux installations, I hesitate to experiment on this OS that took so long to download.

Well, if I wasn't having problems I wouldn't "update" my driver. IF you decide to use their driver copy the old driver/config...etc...to a safe location. After untarring the new stuff if it hoses you you should be able to overwrite the new with the old.
