HP Laptop

Hello
I'm trying to load SuSE 7.3 onto a HP Omnibook XE with XP already on it. I'm hitting problems.

1. SuSE doesn't detect Windows XP - I'd love to get rid of it but I HAVE TO have it at work (it's "their" laptop!!) Linux installs but I'm missing XP. On my desktop, I didn't have this problem with W98 SE.

2. When Linux is loaded, I cannot get the display to occupy more than 1/2 the screen. There's a massive band around the edge (5cm)

Please help!!
Thanks
Thanks

first things first. go into the BIOS. their is a setting to expand the display. Now to mount the win XP side, if this is what you mean......... ok do you have lilo as your boot loader? What are you using as your windows manger (KDE, GNOME)?
just need a bit more info. Also does your company no your doing this?

HP Omnibook woes

What a fast response.
I'm not sure it's a question of mounting XP - SuSE doesn't recognise it as an operating system when I'm linstalling it for the first time. When I installed Linux on my desktop, it repartitioned etc. and then gave me an operating system choice in LILO. This ain't happening on my notebook.

Yes - they know and support my Linux choice!! As long as I keep Windoze aswell.

here's a link at SuSE about the xp problem http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/dstark_linux_xp.html

about the screen, check the bios settings for "screen stretch" or "screen expand" or words to that effect, change that setting, and see if it helps(you may have to re-run sax2)

Windows XP and SuSE 7.3 on HP Omnibook

Thanks - that was a lot of help. Linux (SuSE 7.3) doesn't recognise NFTS Windows XP partitions. Creating a singles FAT32 partition and then installing Linux solved the problem. SuSE recognised the Windows partition and I opted to keep it. Now I just have to decide whether to load XP or W98 onto my laptop. XP seems a little secretive!!
The screen problem is solved aswell.

Thanks a million.

Oh no!!!

Heeeeeeeeeelp!
I loaded SuSE on - no problems. It seemed to recognise the FAT32 partition. To cut a long story short - Win 98 is loaded on to my laptop but I seem to have lost LILO. Boot up goes straight into Windows. Aaargh!
How can I reclaim LILO? I can't get into SuSE now. I placed LILO on the MBR before I loaded on Windows 98. The Windows 98 partition is correct in size. I know that SuSE is there - but how?

Also - the display was fine with SuSE but in Windows, I need help. There doesn't seem to be an option to stretch the screen area in the BIOS.

Thanks

start the SuSE install again and at some point it will offer you a screen that has an option to "boot installed system" select that and once your in linux again run /sbin/lilo as root to update the bootloader.

Thanks Rshaw. Good advice.

Now I have a Linux / W98 dual boot but ....oh no...a BUT...because of driver issues with my laptop and W98, I want to put XP in the place of W98. Does anyone know if I can install XP on top of W98 - or do I need to format the c: drive? The last time I tried this, the HP CD ROM reset factory settings - removing Linux!! I don't want that to happen again. I've got work to do. Perhaps I need to ask this question on a different forum - sorry if that's the case. It seems to be more about M$ products.
Thanks!
