hp deskjet 630c, Redhat 7.1
 

I have just installed Redhat 7.1,and have everything working out except the printer. I had this printer working once before in 6.1 on another machine. That was printtool and this is printconf-gui wich doesn't seem to want to cooperate with me. Do you know of any place that offers sound advice for printer setup in 7.1? I saw wise words for 7.0 (with printtool) and in 7.2 it's supposed to be a snap. But here I am, in 7.1. Wise words appreciated.

I think printtool should stilll be there, it was with RH7.2 as I recall. Try typing it in a terminal as root.

printtool sends you to printconf-gui in 7.1
I get:

i did restart lpd before testing

Could be that the port it runs on (?656) is disabled, like swat and most of the other things you need to set up a RH system without being a command line guru. check in etc/services for a line with 656 in it, probably down at the bottom and uncomment it. Another way would be to use linuxconf (if you installed it, go to control panel, control service activity, and printconf-gui might be on the list, but not enabled.
A final thought, did you do the default install, or did you select individual packages? I've done that a few times, and always omit something crucial.

I checked all those things out, found no 656 or x656 or 656x in services, commented or otherwise. Did linuxconf: under activate configuration found warning service lpd is not running:
execute /etc/rc3.d/S60lpd
did that, doesn't help
re your question: i did a full install everything of redhat 7.1

So lpd isn't running at all. In your linuxconf service control, is lpd listed as a startup service?
And when you say you restarted lpd, what did you do?

lpd is automatic and running in service control
and "restart lpd" is what printconf-gui asks you to do after you have setup a test printque

Question: how to find for sure if printer device is lp0, lp1, or what?

Oh dear, this is tres embarassing. Ok, full revelation. I was going throught this strife with the printer the other day. Nothing worked. Along the way I decided to not try to set up the scanner, as I use it seldom and can just move it to another (windows) machine. So I did, unhook it, that is. Are you seeing it? The passthrough...when I disconected it I disconected the printer as well...oh my.
So when the light dawned and I plugged in the cable it started printing a stack of test pages.

So, evedintly the fix was the /etc/rc3.d/S60lpd
problem that I fixed in linuxconf.

Its amazing how well things work when they're actually plugged in isn't it! Don't worry, I had a highly embarrasing reinstall because networking not working anymore... still dead... Loose cable.
First thing I check now.
