Howto vlc streaming from DVD -> router -> TV (samsung ku 6099)?

Subject says it all: How is it done? There are so many possible combinations in the menus of vlc and the tv that I'm quite lost. So, is there any howto or other link how it is done? I use tumbleweed, latest vlc and codecs are installed... There I go off without necessary information: This is in a LAN/WLAN, i.e. ethernet to the router and wireless from the router to the tv

No expert here but...
Has the tv got a fixed IP? Can you fix the IP?
VLC has Ctrl_N = 'set up a network stream.' What happens when you try?

I do something similar using an Android tablet --> Apple TV(via my wifi router) which talks to a monitor via HDMI using All Cast app.

Web pages like this may help. http://www.howtogeek.com/118075/how-...ork-using-vlc/

One issue I see is that some routers may keep lan and wifi on different vlans.

Best to test on lan then move to wifi.

Yes, IP is set in the router to 198.168.178.26 and tv can talk to the router and got via the router into the www.

Ctrl_N asks for a network address. I want to give my DVD, i.e. /dev/sr0, as source and the tv as destination.

My router has no HDMI socket. I could (with a lot of uncomfortable wires use the pc-graphic HDMI).

Samsung has a pc app -- for windows. *sigh*

@ jefro: Thanks for your input, I'll try it tomorrow, had a long day...

Problem is, the tv is not in a LAN. So I'll have to work with a heterogeneous setup as I wrote in the first post.

I did find out how to connect to the router: open port 49200 of the firewall. The router has an "integrated media center". Connecting to that makes vlc throw the next error:

Quote:

In short: "Couldn't open http://192.168.178.1:49200/AUDIO/DLN...ndexation.mp3". Yah. Well. I'll keep on digging.

Are you trying to substitute another machine and an ethernet cable, where an HDMI cable would be the "simple" answer?

jefro 11-04-2016 03:59 PM

Get rid of this maybe. ""integrated media center"" It may be confusing the deal.

In a way, yes. But otherwise I would have a nasty 10 meter long HDMI-cable all over the room and would have to use the tv as pc-monitor which is awkward, since the keyboard and mouse are not easily reached then.

Plus: It should work from a technical point of view and it is a much more elegant solution to distribute videos over your home network. I just don't know how :(.

No chance. It is part of the router's software (linux derivate by the way), which I can't change.

<edit> The tv can "see" the integrated mediaserver. It just contains empty directories </edit>

No. The worst problem is that I don't know how to connect the tv with the router via WLAN, since the tv's menus have no entry for that. The tv is "seen" by the router and gets its address from the router. Plus the tv can reach the www. Ideas?

Here is the setup again:
pc (with DVD) - <ethernet cable> - router - <WLAN / WiFi> - tv. I want to watch the video of the DVD on the tv.

P.S.: I can't "ping" the tv, no response: "Destination Host Unreachable"

JZL240I-U 11-05-2016 08:19 AM

Found out what the integrated mediaserver is: the router has an USB-port where one can plug in USB-devices the contents of which can then be streamed into the network. The mediaserver is organizing the contents. This is not what I am looking for. I want to use the DVD-player in my pc. *sigh*

You should just be able to use VLC menus to stream the iso file or play dvd.

Web pages like this should work.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-...a-server-home/

http://www.ermshaus.org/2012/09/stre...linux-with-vlc

http://www.tomsguide.com/faq/id-2363...ernet-vlc.html

I get the media deal on router now. Might be possible to use it for a test with a usb and log into router to set up.

JZL240I-U 11-07-2016 11:46 AM

Yes, vlc was the first thing I tried. In the meantime I found posts in the web suggesting a dnla server like serviio or readymedia...

http://www.tomsguide.com/faq/id-2363...ernet-vlc.html

That one brought me a step further. vlc-errors are now with http://198.168.178.26:8080 address of the tv

Code:

http error: cannot connect to 198.168.178.26:8080
access_mms error: cannot connect to 198.168.178.26:8080
core error: open of `http://198.168.178.26:8080' failed

And errors with rtsp://198.168.178.26:8554 address of the tv

Code:

Note that I used the same protocol (first http, then rtsp) for the input stream. Looks like the tv isn't listening on those ports?

What are you trying to tell me here?

crazypenguin 11-07-2016 11:55 AM

Haven't tried it myself. That is PC DVD -> network stream -> smart TV. But I have played around with a lot of server/client streaming over local networks.

I'll just throw this out here for you from the videolan wiki. They recommend mapping the device something like in the example below.
Code:

% vlc -vvv dvdold:/dev/dvd --sout udp:192.168.0.12 --ttl 12
From here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/VideoLAN-HOWTO/x720.html

schneidz 11-07-2016 12:02 PM

when i used to have a pc with a dvd-rom drive in my office i would mount the dvd somewhere on the filesystem. then in my living room downstairs i have a pc running xbmc(kodi); i would mount the upstairs pc drive using sshfs to see the dvd on my tv.

my next idea would be to rip the dvd into an mkv and use a dlna server for the tv to browse and play the mkv file.

JZL240I-U 11-07-2016 12:03 PM

@crazypenguin Just tried it:

Code:

[00007fabc8008718] filesystem access error: cannot open file /home/matthias/dvdold:/dev/sr0 (No such file or directory)
[00007fabc8008718] core access debug: no access modules matched
[00007fabd00009b8] core input error: open of `file:///home/matthias/dvdold%3A/dev/sr0' failed

What protocol is dvdold? vlc is building a path below my ~ directory, that is not where /dev/sr0 is.
