howto share printers on linux network, not samba

Hi,
I have >2 suse 9.1 boxes on my network, and I want to be able to use the other ones printer from my machine (I did it to an old win95 box with out much bother, but that has since become infected and had to be put out to grass, bless it).

I guess I need to set up a print server of some kind on it , but no instructions seem to jump out at me on how to do it. I refuse to use samba, because that would psycologicaly defeat the point of going all linux... If anyone knows of some simple fool proof suse-centric (preferably) instructions, how to that would be nice,

thank you.

You probably already have a CUPS server on your machine! http://www.cups.org/
check the following: http://localhost:631
All you need to do is open access for your other computer.
Have a look at http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/sam.html
Graphical configuration tools may come with your distribution.
Once you have opened access to the cups server on the computer connected to the printer, just configure the cups server on the other computer to add a network printer.

EDIT: In SUSE, all configuration can be done in YaST (I think).

I think i have worked out how to do it, but....

on the pc with the printer, in yast, get in to the printer section, and on the printer configuration page press the button above finish that says change.
on the next page press advanced, then you find the secret menu that sets up the cups server. Then you can enter the magical IP incantations etc of the hosts etc.

then on the pc with out the printer you can go into the printers setup page, not directly from the system - utilities menu note, but from the control center - peripherals - printers page, where it looks the same as the others, but you have the all important administrator mode button which you press. Then and only then can you go to the add printers etc cups etc fairly plain sailing, but still that bastard cups password arrrrrrrrrrrr. why does it wait till the end. why does it not ask at the beggining, and how do you set it up? and why when I enter the root and password does it not recognise them??????????????? GRRRRRRRRRRR. so near but yet so far. so I try again but this time I put my self in as root user and it gets all the way through!!!! but when I do a test print nothing comes out....

any ideas

cheers

I gather that you have set up the printer in cups, and you can see it in http://localhost:631
You can try to print from an application, sometimes to works for me, even if test page does not.
If this fails, make sure you have the right driver (ppd) and see if the job is still stuck in the job list, or if the printer is paused.
