howto run zvg at startup?

Hi,
I'm working on one of those Linux digital picture frame projects on an old spare laptop. I've got RedHat 9 installed. I loaded and compiled all the requisite libs and zvg. I have a Samba share mounted during rc.local time so zvg can access pictures from my server. It works great. My question now is: how can I get it (zvg) to run unattended at startup? if I add the zvg incantation to rc.local after the mount command, it 'seems' to start, the loading progress bar displays, but the program seems to hang and no pix are displayed. If I ssh in from another box, I can start the zvg viewer and it fires right up. Am I missing something with regards to putting this program in rc.local and expecting it to run before anyon has logged in at the console?

Thanks,
Bill

Edit /etc/inittab and change the getty for tty1 like this:
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -l /path/to/zvg 9600 tty1

What that does is tells agetty to run zvg program instead of /bin/login. This will run zvg as root, so if you need to run as a user you will have to do it a different way.

NOTE: This doesn't work with getty or mingetty so you may need to install agetty if you don't have that program.
