howto: control CPU fan speed and Northbridge fan speed?

Hey all,

In windows xp, i was able to use a program called SpeedFan to control my CPU fan speed and Northbridge fan speeds on the fly, I could turn up my fan speeds before doing something intensive, and turn them down before i went to sleep so my room was quieter. Does anyone know if this is possible in linux?

What mobo do you have? For Dell Inspiron laptops there's an utility to do this. On some other laptops/motherboards the fan speed is being regulated automatically with the CPU frequency.
