How would I stop gnome network manager from starting during boot?

I am currently running a client using Ubuntu that uses NFS as a root file system. I want to run gnome Desktop Environment on this client. The problem that I am having is Network Manager starts up and kills the networking connection killing the NFS connection to the root file system.

I need to stop Network Manger from loading during the start process of gnome is this possible?

and how would I go about doing it?

I installed the feisty version of Ubuntu and did an apt-get remove Network manager and now I can boot the root file system as an nfs share.

the difference was between the server version and the client version.

why one worked and one didn't I dont know.
