How, what, and/or why is a crc error ??

I emerged the latest Gentoo-dev-sources.

In /usr/src, there they were.

So, I cd in there, and make menuconfig to put things to my requirements and likings.

I make it.

I copied it to /boot, and the System.map, with the same text format as Gentoo's installation handbook.
I edited /boot/grub/grub.conf to include "Gentoo 2.6.10-r5" pointing to the new kernel.

After POST, I see grub, I choose the new kernel, and instead of seeing a kernel come up, I see it print:
crc error
System halted

What is a crc error ? Why does it happen, how does it happen ?

If it's not an obvious solution, how do I go about preventing or fixing this ?

Thank you .

i dont know squat about gentoo but crc stands for cyclical redundency check. its a very sophisticated error checking scheme. basically its saying your copy is corrupt. when something is copied or sent via a transmission, frames or packets of data are constructed and a special number (a crc) is computed based on the data in the packet and sent alaong w/the packet. when it gets to other end the receiver reconstucts the crc of the packet and compares it to the one the sender sent. if they are equal we can be reasonably sure that packet was not corrupted in transit. if the two crc's do not match an error has occured in transit and thus the "crc error" warning.was this something u copied or burned from another source. cause its saying the original doesnt match the copy...
