I assume you mean the bootsplash screen that comes up during boot? When I looked in to this a while back I found the answer depends on which distribution you are using. So post what distribution you are using. Better still add it to your profile.

On SuSE I found the easiest way was to find the directory containing the default theme, copy it, alter the images as desired then tell the system to use my new theme instead.
