How versatile/helpful/"do I really need it?" is WINE...?

I've installed WINE on my RedHat9 system, and the CrossWhatever program and plug-in... as I have one particular program that I really don't want to be without ( astrolog ), but I ( maybe ? ) got carried away and installed IE6, too...same old hangs, it locks up, it s|-|cks...

I'm a newbie to Linux, with ( ancient ) assembly language ( in DOS ) programmnig experience but I feel like I am very much in my element with Linux. It has NOT locked up eve n once ( and I've been VERY cruel and unkind to it upon this , my new learning adventure ), unlike WIN98SE, which farts, barfs and throws up the towel if you even sneeze in its direction...I guess what I'm asking is if it is time well spent trying to use/learn WINE...?

I have noticed that there is an $89 program which will allow me to run Astrolog under Windows in a Windows window from within ( ....?! "huh? whadd'e say?" ) Linux,'s cheaper to just re-boot into Windows... when I feel the need to attempt predictive astrology. How soon is this integration going to come? How close ARE we to turning Mr. Gate$ back at the door? How close ARE we to trumping his ace..?

I've been as specific as I can be, I guess, as a newbie...I haven't found anything, since installing RedHat, that Linux can't do better, fster and more reliably...than
. . . .
. . .
( I was trying to portray a slow leak...drip, drip, drip, potentially fatal loss of |3lood with my amateurish text-art ) ( lol )

-Allen ( thoughts/directions/guidance, anyone ? )( practical OR philosophic... )

I certainly don't think wine is "needed" by anyone to have a productive linux system. For the vast majority of Windows-only programs out there, there's something similar enough native to linux, and often times it's (legitimately) free.

The only way to really judge whether you "need" wine or not is if there's some Windows-only app that you simply must have. In my case, I'm one of those EverQuest nerds you hear about. I've got EQ up-and-running beautifully via winex3, and I haven't booted to win98se since.

If there's no linux equivalent to your software, my best suggestion would be to turn to Google. When I was looking for tips to make EQ run, +everquest +linux +wine produced great results.

well d00d, like already said, for whatever it is in windows that you liked, then 9 times outta 10 there is the equivalent in linux ... and just to show how there is numerous equivalents to the one or two windows apps, then you should visit the link in my sig below named "Table Of Equivalents" ...
the other thing is, i personally don't think wine(x) is a waste of time, cause i like to use it for games ... (and thats it) ... there really (IMO) is no point to run any type of app built for windows besides the odd couple that some people need from time to time to do certain tasks ...
you have to remember that wine is still in alpha development so things aren't going to be prestine running ... also i would like to point out the link in my sig below for "Frankscorner" if you didn't already know about it ... and if you didn't, its a site with, for a lack of better terms, howtos on installing certain stuff with wine ...
