some sort of 3d graphics/animation app:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autodesk_Maya

- centos is simply the wrong distro for that, because it's a server distro.

if you still need/want help, you should also provide much more information. please see the first link in my signature.

Very wrong. Centos is the free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) one of the most popular commercial Linux distros, if not the most popular. RHEL is used on the desktop as well which along with desktop versions of SUSE another commercial Linux are popular with commercial software such as Autodesk Maya as a result of their long release cycles and package stability.

A quick look at the Autodesk Maya web page for Linux shows that it was built on RHEL 6.5 and there are installation instructions for Centos 6.5. Centos 6.5 would just be the free version of the commercial Linux on which it was actually built.

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/searc...ement-htm.html

So no Centos 6.5 is very much the correct distro as there are explicit instructions on how to install Maya on Centos 6.5 in the link above.

Just because Centos is mainly popular as a server OS doesn't mean it isn't used on the desktop for the same commercial Linux applications that RHEL is used.

A bit of an understatement. Maya is famous Hollywood graphics software.

Industry usage

Maya has been extensively used in the films The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005),[12] Silent Hill (2006),[13] Surf's Up (2007),[14] Transformers (2007),[15] The Golden Compass (2007),[16] Monsters vs. Aliens (2009),[17] 9 (2009),[18] Alpha and Omega (2010),[19] Salt (2010),[20] Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011),[21] Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011),[22] the television series South Park (2001–present)[23] and Little Krishna (2009),[24] and the video games Stranglehold (2007)[25] and Halo 4.[26]

The previous version from Alias Wavefront was famously used for Jurassic Park and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, two revolutionary movies from a special effects standpoint along with dozens of others.

It could be the most famous and groundbreaking graphics/special effects software in Hollywood. Its a bit more than "some sort of 3d graphics/animation app"

no, it wasn't.
you are interpreting too much into that sentence.
it IS some sort of graphics/animation app.
may well be the best one, what do i care?

unfortunately the fact remains that op failed to provide even that very basic bit of information, along with more pertinent info like
- WHAT exactly did they try
- WHY wasn't the info provided on their webpages enough, so presumably:
- WHERE and HOW did it fail.
All with actual commands & output.
