How to view .chm files in Gnome ?
 

Hello everybody !!!

I've got a question that was frequently asked before me: how do you view the contents of a .chm file on a GNOME desktop (I mean in KDE you can use konqueror - I've tried to use Mozilla in GNOME to view those bloody files but it displays all sort of irrelevant information). Is there a way to do it without installing xchm and similar software (I mean, how can I view the files using my original linux box - no special software.........) !!! Thanks....................

Have you tried the other browsers that come with Gnome ... Epiphany, for instance?

The last time I needed to open a .chm file, I downloaded some software named CHMreader, or something like that. You don't say what version of Gnome you're useing, but with version 2.12 they've started doing a lot of bragging about Epiphany.

On KDE you can view chm files with Kchmviewer and on GNOME you can use gnochm or xchm. If you are using FC5 I have rpms for gnochm and I can post the link for you.

Use gnochm ?

Well my gnome version is 2.x so I did try to use Epiphany and it really did work !!!! I tried to use konqueror on gnome as well so now I've got a good choice :-) Thanks for the suggestion, finally I got the problem straight out !!!

By the way I did not find the gnochm or xchmviewer command !!! Any sugestions?

They are not standard in many Linux distributions so you have to install them yourself. Take a look at dag's repo, it may have the packages you need.

Hey Guys I found a gret program to view .chm file using the dag link ( thanks again reddazz !!! ).The program is called gnochm - I installed it using yum (a lot easier....) You should try it - it really works (just as the Windows version only far better - well Linux in total is far better than some Windows :-)......Linus RESPECT !!!! :-) )

yum install gnochm worked great! I'm running FC5 on my laptop and the following packages were also downloaded and installed in case someone is doing this manually.

I have been looking for these programs I found it easy to get it for other distribution that SUSE. Questions is Can I install this program where they were developed for red hat or fedora or anyother than SUSE? will it work? or I have to look for these specifically developed for SUSE.
