How to update kernel on SuSE 8.2?

I need to upgrade to kernel 2.6 because, I've read, kernel 2.4.20 doesn't include AGP 3.0 support...I'm right about this...right? right?

Anyway, if I am right, can I just go to freshmeat.net, download the newest kernel, and go from there? I went to YaST Online Update and the new kernel wasn't listed. Does that mean it can't support it? If I can install 2.6, what's a good step-by-step for kernel updates by newbies? I really appreciate the help in advance.

Kernels (the sources) aren't available from freshmeat. You get them from www.kernel.org. The latest stable kernel is 2.6.2 but don't click on the link on the front page. That takes you to a patch. If you want the whole source then just browse the ftp or http servers. I'd recommend this over using a precompiled kernel from your distro. The kernel you compile will be much smaller and you'll learn a lot during the process.

I don't know of any step-by-step guides except for a debian one here. It's not very good for non-debian distros. Basically, the procedure is:

Code:
make menuconfig (or make xconfig)
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install (as root)
You do the above from the root directory of your kernel source. If yo uhave any problems, I'm glad to help.

There's a good guide to kernel compilation on www.linuxdoc.org.

I don't know. Download the code and do a make xconfig and then check if there's an AGP option somewhere.

Btw, I found a kernel compile guide here, in the Linux - General forum.
