Hello
I have been given a 1.9GB zipx file (created with a recent version of winzip). I can't find a way (and yes I googled it) to open it on Linux.
Suggestions?
Doesn't look like there's a native tool yet for linux that explicitly claims support for this "new" zip format.
Two suggestions based on Googling:
Try Unarchiver 2.4 from here: http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html ..You may need to rename the zipx files to .zip extensions first, but apparently it works. I *think* unarchiver is available for Linux (I didn't read far enough to see), but if not, run it in Wine.
Second: Use WinZip, again in Wine.
Yes, Wine = PITA compared to a native app, but if you must, and you can't get yourself sent a copy of your zipx files in a more useful/common format (like bzip2), it may be the only option.
***Bump***
Hmmmm...Just ran into this issue with a .zipx file and RHEL8. Still don't see a solution to this and yes I did Google first.
I've heard conflicting stories, but have no first-hand knowledge. I've heard that zipx is a proprietary WinZIP thing available only in their commercial version (which can run under WINE). And I've also heard that you can use p7zip (Linux native), and it will work.
Don't know, honestly, but p7zip is at least worth a try.
$ html2text --pad-tables /usr/share/doc/p7zip/MANUAL/general/formats.htm|sed /^ZIP/q
# Supported formats
Format | Creation | Filename Extensions
---------|----------|-----------------------------------------
7z | X | 7z
BZIP2 | X | bz2 bzip2 tbz2 tbz
GZIP | X | gz gzip tgz
TAR | X | tar
WIM | X | wim swm
XZ | X | xz txz
ZIP | X | zip zipx jar xpi odt ods docx xlsx epub
There's partial support for zipx format in the p7zip program from EPEL.
...and thanks for not attacking me for revisiting a 11 year old post. It had over 16,000 views so I figured it was worth bringing this up again as folks are looking for a solution.
