how to tell if i have run make clean?

hi all

i am going to be upgrading my php installation soon
but i still have my old version on the server

my question is, in case something goes wrong and i need to rollback the installation

how can i tell if i just need to run "make install" from the old php directory
or whether i will need to build it again?

and if i run "make install" will it actually overwrite the newly installed version?
is there anything i need to do to ensure this will happen (overwriting the php binary that is)

thanks
dave

Go to the build directory and search for the binary. If the binary is there then you probably don't need to do another make. If you do need to run make again you will most likely get errors when you run make install.

Also I'm sure that running make install will overwrite any existing binary's you have previously installed. It's like installing an rpm with the -force option. However if the new package places newer versions of library files on your system then they will still be there. You should run make uninstall to completely remove the new package before re-installing the old package.

oh ok, cool, thanks
but exactly what am i looking for when i'm looking for a binary?
especially php

the build dir's look pretty much the same for built php-4.3.9, and unbuilt php-4.4.1 (this one actually has one more file)
