How to start an application/service in startup?

Say, I want to start a firewall upon booting up the machine, even if no one has logged in. What should I do? Does it has anything to do with rc2.d or any other scripts?

Btw, I am using a Ubuntu7.04 Linux.

Thanks!

If you login as root and try

iptables -L

you'll prob find f/w is already up.

Thank you for your answer.

In fact, firewall is simply an example. How, in general, can an application or service be automatically started once the system is booted up (even when no one is logged in)?

you are right, its in the rc scripts in the etc directory. they are not very standardized across distros and I am not too familiar with the version in ubuntu, try their wiki for details on how their scripts interact.

As that's a distro specific qn, I'd suggest asking to get this moved to the Ubuntu forum here at LQ, and/or ask here: http://ubuntuforums.org
