Try to point out where the program is failing or if it is the program? Use strace or something similiar if available to see where the program hangs, if its the program itself or not. But Yahoo changes its protocol more often than I change my underpants, or so it seems that way, I would bet you probably just need to upgrade gaim to the latest version, etc.
