How to setup wildcard DNS

Hi All;

I need to setup wildcard DNS on my redhat Linux server.

Here is my configuration

Redhat Linux with webmin enabled.
Apache 2.0

I have installed plexum 5.0 marketing module on it. It has the features that each user can get their sub-domain. So I would like to know to configure the DNS to run wildcard DNS.

E.g. www.domain.com

When I add new user say “test” on plexum, it creating set of own web pages for the user in the following directory.

/domain.com/member/test

When I click the “Launch Website”

http://test.domain.com it is not picking the relevant pages from the test directory instead it is loading the default www.domain.com page.

So could anyone help me to configure above scenario?
Also I would like to know do I have to edit the httpd.conf? In that case number users will be more and my server setup was single IP with multiple domain hosts.

Thanks & Regards
Rahu

Just doing a google search for reverse DNS shows a lot of links. What do you have set up in bind so far? Can you paste what you have for your zone file right now? It should be something like:

* IN A <ip_address_of_the_webserver>

Thanks for your reply.

I have configured the DSN Zone file to support wildcard DNS. I want to know to how to write the proper mod_rewrite to redirect the requested URL to relevant user directory.

eg. http://test.mydomain.com

actually take it to

http://?.mydomain.com/member/?

where ? = test

So if anyone can tell me how to write the appropriate mod_rewirte configuration.

thanks

I don't think mod_rewrite (I could be wrong) can do what you want as it usually does a pattern match for everything after the domain. So you can't do a pattern match for test but you could try "Redirect ^test" and see if that works. Maybe I am wrong .

If the above doesn't work, what I would try is create a virtual host directive for "test.mydomain.com" and put in a redirect statement there.
