How to setup honeypot?

Hi! I'm kinda curious on security. I want to learn how intruders get to enter once network. I have setup IPCop. It has all the features that I need including OpenVPN integration and Snort IDS. Now, I want to setup honeypot so that I will be able to understand how hackers get into the system and if my IPCop is really strong enough to withstand penetrations. Can you please give me some tips? Hardware requirements? What are the things that I need to make honeypot work? Is it possible to broadcast it over the net without connecting anything to my local network? Thanks.

I've actually just started working on such a project. I setup a xen server so I could have a seperate box for this. I found this website to be pretty useful.

I would love to give you more information, but as I'm just starting, I'm as lost as you probably are. BTW thanks for the reference to IPCop, I had never heard of it before, looks usefull.
