How do I go online in Linux?

I have a bootable USB for Lubuntu and also one for Linux Mint; I've tried booting both of them from USB drive in my Gateway netbook and I don't connect to the internet (can't find the server) with either one.

I have in mind a couple of possibilities as to the problem:

1. Is this something that can only be done after installing?

2. Is this a problem with the Atheros WiFi Adapter?

Obviously if I install and have no internet connection, there will be no way to download whatever more is needed, will there?
