How to safely copy IMAP messages from one user to another

Two years ago one of my customer's employees sort of retired. His wife has a very well paying job and he wanted to be home for the kids. He was suppose to be reading his e-mail and forwarding anything of interest to management. Somewhere along the way he stopped reading his e-mail. Today I changed the virtusertable to point inbound e-mail for him to another employee but see there are over 3900 e-mail messages in his IMAP folder. Other than having to add another piece of software to someone's computer there that reads a different IMAP account (like Eudora or Thunderbird), is there a way I can safely forward these 3900+ items so IMAP keeps track and updates it's counters etc?

Sounds like a task for a small CLI tool with a name something like "imapcopy"...
