How to Run Red Carpet

I just downloaded Ximian Red Carpet for MDK 9.2 and I can't find any command anywhere to run the program. The packages the Ximian site told me do download are rcd and rug, is there something missing?

Thanks,
Ted.

I think the executable is just called 'red-carpet'. If you installed from RPM, you can see a listing of all the files that are part of Red Carpet by typing:

rpm -q --filesbypkg red-carpet

If that doesn't work, you can find out what the name of the RPM was by running:

rpm -qa | grep -i carpet

Then re-try the first command with whatever name it gives you.

When I went to the Ximian site, the only files listed after clicking the link to download the rpm's for Mandrake 9.2 were:

rcd-2.0.1-0.ximian.7.0.i586.rpm
rug-2.0.1-0.ximian.7.0.i586.rpm

I thought that was a little strange so I guess I will have to find an rpm for red-carpet.. Rpm is showing that red-carpet is not installed.

Thanks for the help.

Ted.

After you get it installed.

"rcd" runs as a daemon, make sure it runs upon boot. "rug" is the command-line client which interacts with rcd. Also there should be a graphical client as part of the package.

# rug channels
# rug subscribe <channelname>
(pause a bit as it goes and downloads a list of packages)
# rug list-updates
# rug update -y

For instance...

Did you give it enough time to communicate? Try again now... Is rcd running? (# service rcd status) Check the logs:

Jan 4 09:38:30 www rcd[1129]: id=68 BEGIN 'Downloading http://red-carpet.ximian.com/rcd-snaps/common/rcd.png' (running)

That was a snippet from my /var/log/messages file

Try running "rcd" in non-daemon mode directly with some debugging, read up on this via "man rcd".

Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I'll figure it out eventually. Actually I think the problem is that I have MDK 9.2 and most of Ximian's software does not recognize it yet.

Have a good day,
Ted.
