how to record with ffmpeg

I am trying to record streaming audio or microphone input with ffmpeg

the syntax is usually

$ffmpeg -i infile outfile

when no infile is provided ffmpeg will do video/audio grabbing which means it will grab whatever is there. If I start audio streaming with mplayer (Public Radio for example) the command

$ffmpeg audio-file.mp3

will record the radio station but it will also record microphone input which seriously decreases the quality of the recording. Using my mixer, I don't seem to be able to turn off one and turn on the other (what comes out of my speaker [audio streaming] on the one hand, internal microphone input on the other hand).

I use gnome on Ubuntu 6.06. The Volume Control centre gives me "Microphone" and "Capture" under "capture" to control, but every possible combination either makes ffmpeg record both internal microphone and streaming or none.

Thanks for the help,

Try the alsamixer command. See if you can goto the micphone level bar and hit the ' M ' key to mute the channel. There will be a MM above the bar when muted.
