Hi all. Well, the point is this: I'm looking for a good software which allows me to record my desktop and make a video with it. So far I've tried three programs: Istanbul, xvidcap and pyvnc2swf-0.9.1. Istanbul videos run very fast and my beryl effects aren't recorded fine with this program; besides, it records in .ogg format and I need the videos to be Windows compatible to share them with my friends who're using windows (and probably to upload them to youtube). xvidcap makes videos in mpeg but when you play the video it runs very fast (i've played with the options but haven't found the perfect config to make a good video) and again, you can't notice clearly the beryl effects. With pyvnc2swf-0.9.1 I can record videos with a better quality but there are two problems with this program: first it records the videos in .swf format so you'll need a flash player to play them; second, when you play the videos they go a bit slow and everything looks fragmented. So, my question is: is there another easy-to-use software to make videos of my desktop with good quality and preferably in mpeg format?? or which settings should I use with xvidcap to make a good video (when I've used this program the lenght of a 2 minutes video is just about 2mb, so you can figure the poor quality of the video)??

Never tried it but this might be in a round about way to do this. There is an app called vnc2swf. It is suppose to record what is happening over a vnc connection. If you setup vncserver on the machine and then connect to from it self which will be a new display desktop if not using display:0. Normal setup opens a new gui desktop in say display:1 or what ever you define in setup. Check this link on vnc setup if you never used it. http://fedoranews.org/tchung/vnc/

@Brian1: thank you; I tried pyvnc2swf-0.9.1 which (I think) is a kind of vnc2swf fork and my videos are recorded pretty mcuh fine, but in .swf format but I need them to be in .mpeg format, anyway, I can give it a try to see how it goes.

Wish I seen that a little closer. Maybe when I schemed over your post the name sent something to the back of head. There are some tools to convert swf to avi I believe which can then be transferred to mpeg but the quality I am sure will be bad at the end.

When it comes to pulling video the only video output I know of that works is X11 versuses xv. X11 is very slow and cpu hog.

No problem, my friend ; then I'll use pyvnc2swf and try it to convert the video to .avi; btw, do you know of any good tool to convert .swf's to .avi's (I can google for it anyway, but I'm going to bed in a while, so it will be tomorrow).

Did you ever figure out how to convert SWF to something else? I dont see how to do it with ffmpeg, mencoder, or anything else :-(

I'm curently using gtk-recordmydesktop, it's very good actually; only thing is the output is in .ogg format, which is good if you want to share your videos with linux users, but if you want the video to be windows compatible (for example, to upload it to youtube or share it with your windows friends), you must convert it using ffmpeg (or some program like that).

Had to install it in order to find which command launches it. It has two executables: vnc2swf and vnc2swf-edit.
