How to Read a Troff Man File

:newbie:

OK I am still showing my newbieness. I've download and installed "The GNU Krell Monitors". Yeah I was able to do something right. I'd give you a screen shot but I'm afraid I would crash my system :D Anyway I wanted to read the man files on this program but when I click on the the files gkrellm.1 and gkrellmd.1, which are both listed as Troff documents there are no programs associated for these files. Which program should I use to open these files?

This begs me to ask another question. How does Linux keep track of which program is associated with each file. Is there a seperated attribute of the files system that is not visible to the end user?

Thanks Steve

Does typing man gkrellm not work?

steve65 10-20-2002 06:59 PM

I did not know about that command but I did try it. I received "No manual entry for gkrellm.1" or "No manual entry for gkrellmd.1"

No... you don't need to .1 or d.1
Have you got GKrellM working? If so, then chances are that the manual pages have also been installed. Try just man gkrellm

Duh, Works great now :D Now I just have to work my way around them! Thanks for the help!!

No worries! Just remember that the man pages (man something) are very, very useful, if a little cryptic at times. You can also access the man pages right from this very site:

Are there instructions on how to get around in the man pages? Like exiting, searching for a word, etc.

Thanks

q to quit
arrow keys (up and down) to scroll lines
space to scroll down pages
As for searching, not sure. I don't know if SuSE supports apropros which can search through the man pages for a given keyword... works in Mandy, but not tried it in anything else.
