How to put subtitles into a movie file?
 

I have a MPEG file that I want to put subtitles into and I need a program to support it.

Putting in the subtiles once you know what goes when isn't a big problem with various DVD tools. But the problem I need an application for is coming up with which text to put when.

I need an application that plays the mpeg file and via keystrokes allows me to interrupt, type my text, define how long it is visible, then continue the movie.

Any suggestions?

Subtitles are generally done via a secondary file outside of the video itself. During video playback, the player loads up both the video and the subtitle file and syncs them up.

Are you saying you want to overlay the text onto the actual video so there is no separate subtitle file?

No, what I'm saying is that I don't have a problem with getting the subtitles to show up. I have a problem telling the computer which text comes when. I need an interactive application that allows me to show and stop the movie and type in the text.

People on ubuntuforums pointed out a few candidates I'm going to try.
