How to properly configure Xorg 7.4 and higher?

As i concluded, starting from some version, xorg.conf is not the only file to configure xserver Xorg, some other mechanisms are added such as HAL. But when i google "xorg configuration", only the old tutorials show up which describe configuration of xorg.conf.
Where can i find detailed up-to-date information on Xorg configuration?

Maybe man xorg will tell you the files you need to poke at.

Well, it doesn't... Yes, it seems that major configuration is done via xorg.conf, but if i do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg on Ubuntu, it gives some options to select from, but xorg.conf remains unchanged... That means, the configuration is done somewhere else. But where?

It looks like you can get it to use xorg.conf by adding the following line to the ServerLayout or ServerFlags section of xorg.conf:
Code:
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
See this link (it's for FreeBSD but seems general enough). Otherwise, you'll have to muck around with the hald and dbus config files too.
