How to print several photos on the same sheet with GIMP
I want to print several photos (4 to 8) on a single sheet of paper. Usually called a contact sheet using the GIMP

You could probably do it with layers: one photo per layer.

Start with a base layer of the size sheet you want to use. Put one photo in the upper left.

Put a transparent layer over that, with one photo in the upper right.

Continue adding transparent layers with one photo until you have added all the photos you want.

Save and print.

Some Photo album programs automate this process, but I am not aware the GIMP has such a thing. Perhaps a plug-in??

I'd use Gimp to size the pictures, then lay them out with Scribus.

The 'low-tech' but very efficient way to do this is to use the netpbm tools, which include utilities for resizing, converting and stacking images in rows or columns. These are usually combined in pipelines or batch files for the required effect.

Alternatively there is a perl script called icontact which goes some way to automating the process.

I`d definetely recommend Imagemagick`s montage. You`ll need something like

montage IMG1 IMG2 ... -adjoin -geometry '100%' -tile COLSxROWS IMG_TOTAL
if you do not wish to scale the images (see -geometry manual)
