redhat can't play mp3 by default but there are some packages that you need to install to enable mp3 like http://www.gurulabs.com/downloads/xm...-21.p.i386.rpm

You can play .dat video file with mplayer, or simply rename *.dat with *.mpg and play it with any video program.!

SuSE 10.0 x86_64 can not play mp3 files too. Eventhough it has xmms, amarok, xine by default.
When I open amaroK 1.3.1 and play file ChildrenOfBodom.mp3, there is no sound. It displays Song Name, Artist, Album and Length. Do I need to install plugged-ins or something can extract mp3 files? My sound card works well.
Playing movie files, I have similar errors. xine requires more plugins.
I do not know how play my media files. Please help!

Lightbulb Download the source of XINE + XINELIB + XMMS

Due to legal issue the xmms , xine and other multimedia software included with Fedora , Redhat, SUSE etc. are with out "Closed source" or commercial codecs (such as MPEG,iTune,MP3,avi dvd etc.)

1) Download xinelib , xine-ui from www.xine.hq in source tar.xxx format .

Install those programs with usuall : "unpack , cd directory, ./configure , make install" method!
Remember to install xinelib first then xine-ui.

2) Download XMMS from it's site and install it as like above .

(*** if you don't know how to install from see "INSTALL" file included with every package ***)

Now you can enjoy seeing movie , VCD , DVD or listning to MP3

(***** =====
Keep those archives downloded in safe place such as cd/Dvd as those site might also be banned after some times !!!!!!!!!!! You will need those when it is that time while reinstalling your LINUX !!
****** =====)
