How to play a video file on a machine without a desktop environment?

I'm completely in the dark about X-windows. I have it installed on a desktop free system (latest Ubuntu Server), but haven't the foggiest notion of how to get mplayer, for example, to play an mpeg file. I'd like not to have a desktop environment either.

Try mplayer. According to the man page mplayer will work without X Window.
