How to open "Microsoft Access DB"
 

Hi all,

I have run several searches, but my results have not been helpful :(

Is there any way I can open a Microsoft Access Database (2002) in Linux? I have Mandrake 9.1.

I don't even need to be able to write to the database, just need to view it and search it.

I was sure MS had a Linux viewer, but if they do, I can't seem to find it.

M$ does not have a "linux" anything...sorry to disappoint you.

However, I believe OpenOffice can access Access db files...so you might want to search their sites (or tinker with the software, I find it pretty good)

I used to have a link on how to do this, but I have not been able to find it for you...sorry.

can't you export all the tables and queries as text, then import them into mysql or some other database server.

Yes, I could do an SQL dump, but I am looking for a way to access the direct database, not just the data.

Although I only need to be able to view the data, the contained MS file gets updated once per day. I basically bring it home every night. So it would be nice if I don't have to take extra steps each and every day to view the data :(

I am looking into Openoffice.org right now, but so far, I have not read anything aboout opening an Access file in the same way you can open a Word and Excel file.

You could create a macro in the access db to export the data to excel. take the spreadsheet home (or email it) and open it with open office

TotalNoob: Stick with it. I KNOW there's a way. I'm still digging for that link (I went through my bookmarks BUT I think I had printed this out for future use...so I'm working on it). As SOON as I find it, I'll post it here.

You might always also want to look at UnixODBC (google for Unix ODBC and you should find it) because then, you could connect through OpenOffice and that and that might let you access your .mdb. (I'm grasping at straws here with a weak memory).

You might want to try looking at these. I had an app once that let me view the tables and such in access from Linux, but I forget what it is called.
