How to open files from fireftp plugin for firefox

I don't know if this is the right place to ask but:

I cannot open a file from the fireftp window using 'ctrl + o' or selecting 'open' from the menu- nothing happens, I have tried various file types.

In windows this opens the file in notepad the default text editor.

Any ideas?

I am using Ubuntu by the way
