I managed to mount my USB flash-disk on Slackware by following this tutorial:

http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/...WTO/index.html

PS: This topic has been posted many times in the forum so with a little search you will find the proper information I think.

Relative newbie here but I didn't have to edit fstab to mount a flash drive the way you are mounting it.Try changing fstab back to the way it was and try it

Alsocheck you /dev/ directory for other st# entries just in case something else is already associated with sda1.

Do you have usb-support in the kernel - or the modules for this loaded?
It appears that this is not the case - else the device would exist when you plug it in.
What does your system see the device as - look in the logs when you plug it in and pull it out there should be some info
Check /etc/fstab again.
