What Programs are you trying to run exactly? Wine isn't totally perfect and isn't really "Noob friendly" and requires some configuration.

The idea of linux is to use linux programs. Once you come back with what you are trying to run, maybe we can suggest alternatives that'll run natively...

What does Encarta have that Wikipedia doesn't? Baring in mind that I haven't used Encarta since '96...

Encarta has interactive animations and sound.
Programs which are run by wine usually control their size themselves. Don't know if all but my quicktime player does. And look here: http://www.codeweavers.com/ if you really need powerpoint and do not want to play with wine. You can also run powerpoint with wine, but configuring it so requires more efforts.

EDIT: some links:

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=13.

what kind of Configuration do I need? I can have some time with this, but what does it require??? I also want to learn how to run things with wine as a hobby.
I think you are right about Encarta and Wikipedia, but we still have a problem with the Internet cost , I hope that I could get ADSL at that time but I am not sure about that.
thanks alot for you response.
